Overview
Japanese wooden architecture, admired worldwide, originates not in temples or houses but in the forest. This unique experience takes you into a certified private timber forest near Tokyo, typically closed to the public, to explore how Japanese architecture begins with trees and long-term forest management. Guided by a master forester whose family has managed these mountains for over 300 years, youâll learn how forests were intentionally cultivated to produce strong, straight, and durable timber for Edo period architecture and beyond. The experience includes a hands-on thinning demonstration and a craft session using local timber historically used in buildings. youâll create a tangible reminder of how Japanese architecture begins long before construction. This tour is perfect for travelers interested in architecture and Japanese environmental philosophy, offering a rare opportunity to understand Japanâs architectural heritage from its material origins.
